In the summer of 2015 Niels painted the story Night of Nunca in an old chicken shed on the idyllic countryside near Utrecht. Because the huge canvases didn’t fit through the door, he and his friends had to strip the roof to get them in. Niels painted for nine days straight on the 10 meter wide piece, eating and sleeping in the shed.

The project became an experiment in storytelling. By using the natural light that came through the canvas and projecting a layer of animations over it, Niels brought the painting to life. Visitors could experience the painting while seated on a moving couch and heard music especially composed for the occasion by Jesse Marks.
